Raising Awareness on World Cancer Day

Every year on 4th February, the world comes together to observe World Cancer Day, a time to raise awareness of the global struggle against cancer. This year, which is the 30th Anniversary of The Primrose Foundation, we are shining a light on the vital work being done across Devon and Cornwall to assist those affected by breast cancer.

Our chair of Trustees Fiona had this to say about this all-important day ‘’Without the work of The Primrose Breast Care Centre, I know I wouldn’t be here as I was diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma 7 years ago’’.

‘’I am proud to chair our wonderful local charity that supports the Primrose Breast Care Centre service at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. The charity provides essential funding for state-of-the-art equipment such as the prone ultrasound table, specialist training at The Royal Marsdon Hospital for breast care nurses and patient support.  We also support women going through chemotherapy by providing wig grant funding’’.

‘’The Primrose Foundation is making a huge difference in the lives of those making their way through cancer and breast disease treatments locally.  Have you spotted our big pink bus which encourages women to attend their screening appointments?  If not watch out for it in Plymouth, I recently spotted it on Royal Parade.

If you haven’t already, please look at our website to view our animation which encourages women to LOVE Themselves Enough To Be Breast Aware which has been voiced by Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders, who went through breast cancer too’’.

We can’t do this on our own and you can help us make a difference.

On World Cancer Day, there are countless ways to get involved and support our work against breast disease.

  1. Donate: Contributions to The Primrose Foundation directly fund vital services and equipment.

  2. Volunteer: Give your time to help with events, fundraising, or patient support initiatives.

  3. Spread Awareness: Share the message about the importance of early detection and regular screenings with friends and family.

  4. Participate in Fundraising Events: Whether it’s a sponsored walk, bake sale, or community event, every little helps and these events are fun.

To end Fiona concludes: ‘As we remember World Cancer Day, it is important to acknowledge that breast and other cancers affect us all, either directly or through someone we love.  I know my family found it tough when I was going through treatment.  This 4th February, let’s take a moment to reflect, act, and stand united against breast disease and cancer. Together, we can move closer to a future where no one has to face breast cancer alone and uninformed.  I for one have been very grateful for the support from The Primrose Foundation and The Primrose Breast Care Centre.   Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Best wishes,

Fiona Osmaston
