Breast Support

We are proud to announce our ‘’Support Us To Support You’’ campaign. A campaign aimed at raising awareness of the many benefits of wearing the right fitted bra, as well as the essential support role The Primrose Foundation provides your local breast care services.

We are very excited about this unique fundraising campaign that will continue for a three-year cycle and will serve many benefits. To find out more on this please click here.

Here are our bra tips and tricks for you which we hope will help aid you in finding the right bra for you.

The benefits of a well-fitting bra:

  • Provide the right support for the weight of your breast tissue.

  • Improve your posture and appearance.

  • Minimize the causes of some breast pain.

An ill-fitting bra can:

  • Dig into the skin.

  • Straps slip off shoulders.

  • May cause spillage of breast tissue over the cup and sides.

  • Can create ‘back fat’.

It’s a good idea to check your bra size regularly as your breast shape and size can change with age, weight gain/ loss, pre and post-periods, pregnancy, menopause, and use of hormone treatments.

Most of the support from your bra is designed to come from under the band, not the straps. A qualified bra outlet may offer a bra fitting service that can help assist you with finding the correct bra to fit you.

Common problems and how to fix them:

  • Breast spillage out of bra cups and under the arm: Try a bigger cup size and/or increase band size.

  • Bra Cups loose, wrinkling: Try a smaller cup size and/or go down a band size.

  • Bra straps digging in: Try loosening straps. If still digging in, breast tissue may be too heavy and not supported by the cup, therefore go up a cup size. Or, your band is too loose (or old and stretched) to support, so the straps are doing all the work. Remeasure for correct band size, or go down.

  • Bra straps slipping: Try tightening straps first. If still slipping then this may be due to the cup size being too big, therefore go down a cup. Sometimes narrow or sloping shoulders may be the cause of slipping straps and a bra with a racerback or a plunge design where the straps are further in would be more comfortable.

  • Bra band riding up: the band should be snug fitting with just a finger’s width of stretch, not loose. Start with a new bra on the loosest hook so you can use the tighter hooks as the bra stretches with wear. You may need to go down a band size.

  • Bra wire digging in: Wearing a bra with or without wires is a personal preference but it is important that the wire goes under the breast tissue and sits behind the breast tissue at the sides of the breast so that it is not digging into the breast itself. Try a bigger cup size. For women with ‘wide-set breasts,’ it can be difficult to wear a wire bra that fits, and a non-wire bra may be a better alternative.

  • Centre of bra at breastbone gaping: this can happen if the cups are too small or if the band is too big.
