Generous Funding from The Primrose Foundation Funds New Nurses

The Primrose Foundation is excited to announce that, thanks to ongoing local support, we have been able to fund two new part-time Breast Nurse Specialist posts for two years.

These essential posts cost over £40,000 to fund per year and, without local supporters continuing their fundraising efforts, would not have been possible.  Both posts will support the existing team at The Primrose Breast Care Centre, University Hospitals Plymouth and make a huge difference to patients receiving treatment at the Centre.

The first post is a part-time Reconstructive Support Nurse who will look after those needing immediate and delayed reconstructive surgery.  The second is a part-time Oncology Support Nurse who will join the existing team helping those receiving treatment for primary and secondary breast cancer.

Dr Jim Steel, Service Line Director of Breast Services, Consultant Breast Radiologist, had this to say;

“There are many people in the Centre, about 60 in total, from surgeons to cleaners. All of them doing their best, most of them remarkable, all of them friends. But when I look at the patient surveys the single most important or valued team member for our patients we see every day, helping them through the nightmare that having a breast cancer diagnosis can seem, is the Breast Care Nurse.

The Breast Care Nurse role goes on innovating and improving year on year, each step making it better for our users, whether helping with breast pain, drop-in clinics, survivorship, oncology links, screening, counselling, family history, or most importantly being there - our nurses are fabulous, and I cannot get enough of them.

Which is why the appointment of these two posts, funded by The Primrose Foundation, is a brilliant day for us. Thank you all, you wonderful donors, from the bottom of my heart.”

The Primrose Foundation is honoured to be able to fund these essential posts and is very grateful to everyone who has donated and continues to donate so generously. Every contribution makes a huge difference and helps us support patient care at The Primrose Centre.

Madeleine Matthews, Fundraising Coordinator, continues;

I would like to echo Dr Steel’s thanks as without those who step out of their comfort zones and do something different to raise money for us, we wouldn’t be able to fund essential roles like these.

We work closely with our supporters and listen to those who have received treatment and the message is clear; Primrose is a wonderful service filled with fantastic people.  We wish to thank every member of the breast care team who provide a warm and comforting service to those going through life-changing treatment.

Everyone here at The Primrose Foundation is delighted to welcome Katie and Kara to the team and would like to wish them both the very best of luck in their new roles.”
