The Healing Power of Nature and the Ability to Thrive

The Healing Power of Nature: Why Walking Outdoors Matters

Many of us enjoy being outside looking at the amazing coasts, rivers and landscapes we have in our region. However, in today’s fast-paced world, it’s very easy to get caught up in daily routines and miss out on the simple pleasures of life—like taking a walk in nature. Did you know that something as simple as walking outdoors can play a vital role in your overall health? For many of us, including those facing or recovering from breast disease and cancer, spending time in nature offers incredible physical and emotional benefits.

The Importance of Vitamin D

One of the key benefits of walking in nature is exposure to sunlight, which helps the body produce vitamin D. This essential nutrient supports bone health, boosts immunity, and has even been linked to improved mood. If you are local a stroll along the beautiful Hoe could add some extra vitamin SEA too!  A cautionary tale here… be careful not to get too much sunlight, wear factor 50 sunscreen when you can.

Connecting with Nature for Emotional Well-being

The stress of a cancer diagnosis or treatment can be overwhelming. Spending time outdoors can provide you with some much-needed escape, help to reduce anxiety and improve thinking. Research has shown that walking in green spaces can lower cortisol levels—a stress hormone—and improve overall mood. It’s not just about exercise; it’s about reconnecting with the natural world, which can be really grounding and restorative.

Walking as a Path to Thriving

Walking is a gentle yet effective form of exercise that is accessible to people of all fitness levels. For breast disease and cancer survivors, it can aid in recovery, improve cardiovascular health, and enhance energy levels. More importantly, it is a step toward thriving, not just surviving. Setting small, achievable goals, such as a daily 30-minute walk, can help build confidence and a sense of accomplishment when everything seems so out of control.  One of our campaigns this year encourages you to Thrive in 2025 by taking part in a 303 for 30 charity chellenge… so a 30 minute walk would be a great start. For those who would like to know more about the gentle exercise programme we support please look at our website.  This programme is for patients who have gone through surgery and want to return to exercise, it is led by a fully qualified physiotherapist and is an online course over 12 months.

Supporting Vital Causes: The Primrose Foundation

The Primrose Foundation understands the importance of all approaches to health and recovery. By supporting initiatives that promote physical activity and mental well-being, we empowers individuals to take proactive steps in their journey to recovery. Donations help fund vital programmes and services that support those affected by breast cancer, ensuring they have the resources needed to thrive.  One of the most amazing and wonderful walkers who has helped raise money is Sam who has organised the Primrose Plod for the last few years. With the help of The Primrose Foundation people walk from Princetown (or Yelverton) to Plympton.  In the past Sam, who was only 42 years old when diagnosed with breast cancer, and the Primrose Plodders have raised over £30,000.  What an amazing achievement.  It is the power of walking!

Making It a Habit

Incorporating a walk into your daily routine doesn’t have to be complicated. Start small: explore a local park, stroll along a beach, or simply take a few laps around your area, walk to the shops rather than drive. Bring a friend or join a walking group for added motivation.  Sign up to the next Primrose Plod or join one of the walks that Sam organises each month, just check out The Primrose Foundation Facebook page.  Not only will you feel the physical benefits, but you’ll also be contributing to your mental resilience and overall happiness.

Nature: A Path to Hope and Healing

Whether you’re seeking a moment of peace, a boost of energy, or a way to connect with others, walking in nature offers something for everyone. For those affected by breast disease and cancer, it’s a gentle reminder that healing is not just about medical treatments but also about nurturing the mind, body, and spirit.

Whilst we are walking let’s continue to support The Primrose Foundation, we work to ensure that no one has to face the journey alone. Together, we can move forward, step by step, toward a healthier and brighter future.
