Primrose centre Nurse Takes on Epic Scilly Swim Challenge With Friends

Kate & crew

In September 2022, five local ladies from the South Hams, Devon will take on an epic Scilly swim challenge around the Isles of Scilly, just off the coast of Cornwall in aid of The Primrose Foundation.

Kate Lansdell, Lead Nurse at the Primrose Breast Care Centre will be joined by her friends and swimming buddies, Fiona Harvey, Mel Leal, Jane Longworth and Lucinda Brook.

With an average age of 50 amongst the group and 10 children between them, aged 11 – 21, this sensational Scilly swimming squad are showing us all how it should be done!

On behalf of the Scilly Swimming squad, Kate tells us what inspired the group to Fundraise for The Primrose Foundation.

When the breast service at The Primrose breast care centre first opened, we started with just 2 nurses that supported the surgical part of the service, moving on some 8 years later and with the help of The Primrose Foundation we now have dedicated specialist nurses covering all the elements of the breast service from breast screening, clinic chaperones, breast surgery, reconstruction, and oncology treatment pathways.

We are proud to offer a compassionate and caring service and understand the huge difference having a dedicated nurse specialist has on all those who are seen for breast problems, including cancer, at the Primrose Breast Care Centre.

The nursing and psychological services that we can now provide are largely thanks to the help of The Primrose Foundation, as with local support, they have been able to fund various essential roles, more recently, two fixed-term part-time breast nurse specialists and a Clinical Psychologist for two years.

In addition, the Foundation also helped to fund a beautiful quiet room for patients which provides a warm and comforting area for those that need a moment to themselves.

As the Lead Nurse, I am grateful to The Primrose Foundation for their continued commitment to improving the quality of care all patients receive whilst under The Primrose Breast Care centre and this is just my way of showing my appreciation.

Kate continues; ‘signing up to the Scilly Swim is definitely a bigger challenge than I had initially envisaged!! But I have a wonderful team of friends, that have signed up with me. We inspire and encourage each other when the training in the pool and the sea seems hard (and cold!) and it really helps to spur us on when we think of the money we hope to raise for such a worthy cause.
